The inoculation method further affected the degree of branching (Figs. 1, 2), as well as the cellulase production (Table 1). Therefore, in spore-inoculated cultivations, QM9414 and Δcre1 formed averagely 5 and 8 % more branches per cell as compared to agar-inoculated cultivations. When wheat straw cultivations were inoculated with spores, QM9414 and Δcre1 produced 1.4 and 2 FPU/mL on average (Table 1). This is 1.7- and 1.4-fold higher as compared to agar-inoculated cultivations by QM9414 (0.8 FPU/mL) and Δcre1 (1.4 FPU/mL), respectively. Protein secretion has been suggested to primarily happen at the tip of the apical compartment [37, 38]. The higher degree of branching and the corresponding increase in freshly formed tips, therefore, likely caused the observed increase in enzyme production.

The key to understanding the germination of the seeds having MPD is to identify what kind of environmental conditions overcome dormancy and promote embryo growth. For some species, dormancy break and embryo growth are stimulated by the same environmental conditions while in other species, they need different conditions (Baskin and Baskin, 2014; Zhang et al., 2018). Depending on the species, dormancy break and embryo growth might require (1) cold (0−10 °C) followed by warm stratification (> 15 °C) (Walck et al., 2000), (2) cold followed by warm and then cold stratification (Nikolaeva, 1977; Kondo et al., 2007), (3) cold stratification only (Herranz et al., 2010; Lee et al., 2015), (4) warm followed by cold stratification (Baskin and Baskin, 2014; Zhang et al., 2018) and (5) warm stratification only (Baskin and Baskin, 2014; Galíndez et al., 2018). Nine levels of MPD have been identified based on the response to gibberellic acid (GA3), requirements for cold and/or warm stratification to overcome dormancy, temperature requirements for embryo growth and timing of root and shoot emergence (Baskin and Baskin 2014).

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of different irradiation modes of combined RB on the growth and carbohydrate accumulations of lettuce. Plant morphology, biomass, the contents of soluble sugar, starch and crude fiber, as well as the activities of sucrose metabolism enzymes in lettuce were investigated. Results from this study are expected to improve the application modes of RB light and optimize lighting strategies without adding additional energy consumption in a horticultural production system.
