Maincontents

Climate, litter quality and decomposers drivelitter decomposition. However, little is known about whether their relativecontribution changes at different decomposition stages. To fill this gap, thisresearch evaluated the relative importance of leaf litter polyphenols,decomposer communities and soil moisture for litter C and N loss at differentstages throughout the decomposition process.

A filed decomposition experiment was performed infive plots, South France. The temporal dynamics and interaction of microbes,nematodes, soil moisture and litter quality were studied under 0, 3, 7, 11months of high or low quality litter’s decomposition stages.

Mainresults:

1.More similar communities (microbes andnematodes) happened with converging litter chemistry temporal patterns;

2.Although both microbial and nematodecommunities regulated litter C and N loss in the early decompositionstages, soil moisture and legacy effects of initialdifferences in litter quality played a major role in the late stages ofthe process;

3.Thisresearch provides strong evidence for substantial shifts in how biotic andabiotic factors control litter C and N dynamics during decomposition.
